Providence House

"P" is for "Providence House" and today's photo shows the larger-than-average house of this name which stands on the corner of Cowhill Lane and Albemarle Street, close to the centre of Ashton.

The house was built in 1899 and stands amid smaller terraced houses which were built earlier. On a grassy knoll to the north stands St James' Church, which has appeared here several times.

If anyone knows any more history connected with this house, I would be pleased to hear it.

  1. This is such a regal home. I hope someone can give you a bit of history information on it. It deserves recognition.

I'm no good at doing links, but if you look at http://www.goodshepherdashton.co.uk/index.php/site/about_us/category/st_james/about_st_james/
    it tells you:
'In October 1876, the vicar appealed for the generosity of people to build the Oldham Whittaker Memorial Buildings, a House for the Keeper and Apparitor, a Library and Reading Room for the parish to contain classrooms for Working Men's and Mother's Classes with an upper room for teachers and other meetings. In 1899 Providence House was built, followed by the Vicarage in 1906.'

  10. We were searching for links to my great grandfather who lived in Ashton around the turn of the century and died in 1913. We found your picture of Providence House which we believe he lived in until his death in 1913. If you need to know any further information please please click on my name and send me an e-mail.

  11. My mother-in-law was born in the house in 1942 and lived there with her parents (family name Firth) and grandparents (family name Kelsall). She knows that they rented the house from St. James' church. Her two sisters were also born in the house; the first in 1944 and the second in 1957. Her grandparents died in the house in 1965(Grandmother) & the late 60's (Grandfather). They moved out of the house around 1970 or so. She believes that T. Hastie (who's father owned the garage opposite the house) bought the house from the church in the early 70's. At some point in the house's history (prior to 1940), she believes that a doctor had rented the house from the church and had a number of live-in servants.

It's a beautiful house and I have heard many stories about it from her. We found this blog when trying to figure out when the house was built.
